Refusing to serve the occupation! We are Israeli teenagers who refuse to take part in an army that illegaly and brutally occupies the Palestinian Territories and are willing to pay the price for our struggle against the occupation and in favor of peace.

First prison term for Or Ben-David

Or Ben-DavidOr Ben-David, 19, from Jerusalem, a signatory of the 2009-2010 high school seniors letter of refusal, was sentenced earlier today (29 Oct.) to 20 days in military prison. This sentence follows a sentence of seven days of confinement to base given her a week ago (on the evening of 22 Oct). She is now held in the military prison for women (no. 400) in Tzrifin.

Or originally requested to appear before the so-called “Conscience Committee” (an internal military committee reviewing requests for exemption from military service on grounds of conscience in Isarel), but was never summoned to appear before it.

In a letter explaining her decision to refuse (the full text of this statement can be read here), Or wrote:

To refuse means to say no! No to the military rule in the West Bank, no to the use of violence as a means of defence, no to patriarchy, no to violence against innocent people, no to abuse against soldiers, no to war and no to a society that claims to be democratic, but forces youths to carry weapons, kill and be killed.

I refuse because I want to make a difference. I want all those Palestinian youths who have lost hope to see that there are Israelis who care and who make a different choice. I want all those of my friends who became soldiers or who are about to become soldiers to see that things don’t have to be the way they are and that doing all those immoral things is not something to be taken for granted, that another way is possible, that you don’t have to suffer inside a military system that oppresses you (most soldiers suffer while they’re in the army). Maybe they too will open their eyes and their minds a bit more to what is going on around them.

Or Ben-David is due to be released from prison on November 15th, but is likely to be imprisoned again soon afterwards. Her address in prison is:

Or Ben-David
Military ID 6054025
Military Prison No. 400
Military Postal Code 02447, IDF
Israel
Fax: ++972-3-9579389

Since the prison authorities often block mail from reaching imprisoned objectors, we also recommend you to send them your letters of support and encouragement via e-mail to shministim10@gmail.com, and they will be printed out and delivered during visits.

A brief update also on the case of Efi Brenner: Efi is due to be released from prison tomorrow morning. It now seems likely he will not be sent to prison again, at least not in the near future. The military authorities seem intent on granting him a temporary exemption on account of being underweight. Thanks a lot to all those who took action on his behalf.

Recommended Action

First of all, please circulate this message and the information contained in it as widely as possible, not only through e-mail, but also on websites, social networks, conventional media, by word of mouth, etc.

Other recommendations for action:

1. Sending Letters of Support

Please send the imprisoned objectors letters of support (preferably postcards or by fax) to the prison addresses above.

2. Letters to Authorities

It is recommended to send letters of protest on the objectors’ behalf, preferably by fax, to:

    Mr. Ehud Barak,
    Minister of Defence,
    Ministry of Defence,
    Hakirya,
    Tel-Aviv 64743,
    Israel.
    E-mail: sar@mod.gov.il or pniot@mod.gov.il
    Tel.: ++972-3-6975540 or ++972-3-6975423
    Fax: ++972-3-6976711

Copies of your letters can also be sent to the commander of the military prison at:

    Commander of Military Prison No. 400,
    Military Prison No. 400,
    Military postal number 02447, IDF
    Israel.
    Fax: ++972-3-9579389

Another useful address for sending copies would be the Military Attorney General (note updated fax number):

    Avichai Mandelblit,
    Chief Military Attorney
    Military postal code 9605, IDF
    Israel
    Fax: ++972-3-569-45-26

It would be especially useful to send your appeals to the Commander of the Induction Base in Tel-HaShomer. It is this officer that ultimately decides whether an objector is to be exempted from military service or sent to another round in prison, and it is the same officer who is ultimately in charge of the military Conscience Committee:

    Gadi Agmon,
    Commander of Induction Base,
    Meitav, Tel-HaShomer
    Military Postal Code 02718, IDF
    Israel.
    Fax: ++972-3-737-60-52

For those of you who live outside Israel, it would be very effective to send protests to your local Israeli embassy. You can find the address of your local embassy on the web.

Here is a generic sample letter, which you can use in sending appeals to authorities on the prisoners’ behalf. Feel free to modify this letter or write your own:

    Dear Sir/Madam, It has come to my attention that Or Ben-David (Military ID 6054025), a conscientious objector to military service, has been imprisoned for her refusal to become part of the Israeli army, and is held in Military Prison no. 400 for women in Tzrifin.The imprisonment of conscientious objectors such as Or Ben-David is a violation of international law, of basic human rights and of plain morals. This is especially clear in cases, such as Ben-David’s, in which conscientious objectors are being sentenced more than once for their self-same decision to refuse enlistment.I therefore call for the immediate and unconditional release from prison of Or Ben-David, without threat of further imprisonment in the future, and urge you and the system you are heading to respect the dignity and person of conscientious objectors, indeed of all persons, in the future.
    Sincerely,

3. Letters to media in Israel and in other countries

Writing op-ed pieces and letters to editors of media in Israel and other countries could also be quite useful in indirectly but powerfully pressuring the military authorities to let go of the objectors and in bringing their plight and their cause to public attention.
